As part of the research for our final productions I am going to analyse the opening sequence of the film 'Seven' I am going to do this through you tube and I will watch it as many times as possible so I can fully analyse the opening as I am going to be looking at all aspects ie, the Mise en scene, Camera Shots, Lighting and the Editing.
As it is an extreme close up throughout the whole opening and no image of the actual person, looks like it is the same person throughout the whole opening so get the impression of alone or lonely. Get the impression it’s a male as the hands are big and dirty and this is stereotypical to firstly think it is a male as it doesn’t seem very feminine.

The music is ‘screechy’ rock music with no lyrics. The only lyrics are at the very end that are very ‘rough’ sounding that it’s hard to understand what is actually being said all that I could personally make out is ‘ you get me closer to’ then a couple more words that wasn’t very clear to understand. The music plays until the end of the credits and just cuts out. The music was a good choice as it matches the genre a lot, and gives the audience an impression of the films mystery’s and prepares them for what they’re about to see.Personally I haven’t seen this before so the first impression that I got was that the film is within the horror/thriller genre. The reason I believe this is because the extreme close up gives it more of an effect and gives a mysterious affect as it’s almost like you don’t know what to expect apart from murdering perhaps but then you get the feeling that there may be a twist within the story line as the shots jump from one to another and none of the story is given or any clue of any sort.
Mise en scene is a big factor on this opening as everything gives of an impression. The highlighting of the picked out words you see the actor highlighting things out of a book about when you’re pregnant and senses being heightened.
There are many pictures that are used of various people. At the beginning there is an image in a book of a pair of hands with bent fingers in a black and white drawn picture another is a picture of a man looking terrified like he is being murdered. Another is a young boy whom the actor crosses out his eyes and another picture that really stood out was a male with a large nail right through his head and sticking out of both sides. There are also many shots of pictures that haven’t been developed yet and ones that have but are distorted and the actor is covering them up with clear plastic sheets. All the way through you see big hands that look like they have been in mud and short finger nails with all black dirt inside of them, so again the impression that hygiene isn’t a big factor upon this actor. Also to prove the point of hygiene when the glass is sharp and goes in-between his fingers and thumbs ‘greyish’ small bandages are put on. A needle is run through the tip of the nails in between the finger and thumb and then some cotton is threaded through. There is a lot of shots of a book so another impression you get is that he has a book of horror or thoughts and pictures of murdered people and that the actor gets some sort of pleasure out of it. A dark hair strand is also shown in one shot, this could show some kind of sample that matches one of the pictures that is shown, as the actor gets the strand and sticks it into the book as well as everything else e.g.; the pictures and highlighting of the words in the articles.
The lighting throughout the opening credits are very dark, there are no bright colours and colours that are shown are red, orange, brown and everything else is black and white with objects that are edited and shaded in grey. The lighting is all low key lighting to give an effect of very sharp contrast between light, dark and colours. The camera angles as I have already said are extreme close ups. All the objects are everyday things but because the lighting is all dark and because of the closeness the drama is heightened. The titles of the opening scene bold and straight cut in and out and are only on the screen for about a second. The tittles are separated from time to time and when they come in the back of the screen goes black so the tittles stand out.
